Champika Sayal on Women At the R&A - How changing this decision has meant a great deal for women in golf

The great wait was worth waiting for. The late night PING on my mobile phone jolted me from my sleep. An email from the President of my home club The Delhi Golf Club had sent an email with the good news. A positive decision had been taken by the wise men of R&A by an overwhelming 85% majority – Women were finally to be included in the thus far all men’s club.

Earlier in 2014, wilfully I wrote about my real life experience at Royal Calcutta Golf Club in 1981- hoping that the outcome would be positive. 18/9 becomes a historic day. A Cheer and bow with a Glass of Beer- Here’s to my male golfing friends. ‘Let not your girls walk behind- it’s time to let them run abreast- when they look back with their winning ways – your heart will be swayed away!’

Golf may no longer to be referred to as “GENTLEMEN ONLY LADIES FORBIDDEN”- but a “Gracious, Optimistic, life Fostering ’game- put in my own words, let the game carry the new traditions giving a more friendly environment to all those who know the game.

R&A the world’s oldest body known for their correctness- have come to terms with the fact that women have made great strides in all spheres of life – can this be translated into a fact that after 260 years the correctness of- Rule 1-4 EQUITY in the game has finally matured in a befitting manner!

With challenges of the 2016 Olympics staring hard – some of the other grand old golf clubs “men only” clubs in Scotland who will perhaps host the Olympics in the future years – need to question and on why they would not want to let female players tackle the challenge these courses pose. Why are they simply being made to stay away from them?

On a positive note let’s hope the other courses do follow R&A. Meanwhile India can celebrate the success of their actual grass root players who have been able to rub shoulders with Golf’s Mighty.
