India’s top ranked player and Hero Ambassador Anirban Lahiri is riding on the summit of not just his career but also India’s golf story. He has many firsts to his credit and now with his debut at the Presidents Cup, Asia and India will stage the biennial team competition for the first time.

“The Presidents Cup is going to be big news in Asia,” Lahiri told Reuters. “It’s great to have that spotlight on Asia because people there are going to recognise there is a sport called golf which is a global phenomenon, and a very popular one at that.”

“It’s going to help the growth of the game in Asia, more corporates hopefully are going to invest in it, the events are going to get bigger, the tours will get stronger and better players will come out of the region.

“No question, it’s going to be massive for what this event is going to do for golf in Asia.”

Competing in his first Presidents Cup will add to Lahiri’s already prolific year back in India.

Expressing his elation at the qualification of the Presidents Cup, Lahiri, winner of Malaysian Open and Hero Indian Open, said, “I can’t describe the feeling because growing up, you look up to events like the Ryder Cup and feel terrible about it as you can’t be a part of something like that. But thankfully, we have the Presidents Cup for us to aim for and it is an achievement to make the team.”

Ranked 39th in the world, Lahiri has played in all of golf’s elite events this season — the four majors and the four World Golf Championships events – with a best finish of joint fifth in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
