James Morrison takes charge in Munich

June 27, 2015: James Morrison will take a two shot lead into the final round of the BMW International Open as he seeks a second European Tour win in as many months. Having captured the Open de España in May, the 30 year old from England carded a third round 67 to reach 16 under par at Golfclub München Eichenried.
That was two shots ahead of compatriot Chris Paisley, with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee a shot further back in third and Sweden’s Peter Hanson fourth on 12 under. Having started the day a shot behind Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Morrison quickly hit the front with birdies from close range at the third and fourth.

The 29 year old Paisley, who is yet to record a top-ten finish on The European Tour, kept pace with four successive birdies from the third, and when Morrison birdied the eighth from ten feet Paisley picked up a hat-trick of gains from the ninth to bring the pair level on 14 under par.
But Qualifying School graduate Paisley three putted the 14th and picked up only one more shot after pitching close at the 16th.

Morrison surged clear, converting from six feet at the 12th, twice that distance at the 15th and close range on the 16th before dropping only his second shot of the week on the last when he pulled his approach into the grandstand.

“I played good again,” said Morrison, whose victory in Spain came five years after his maiden title in Madeira. “I didn’t really give anything away. The last was disappointing but I had such a bad lie on the left-hand side and to that pin. The scoring has always been low over the years, so you have just got to keep going low and keep making birdies and I did that.”

Paisley was 13th in Sweden three weeks ago – only two places shy of his career-best finish – and the former English Challenge winner believes this sort of performance has been coming for a while.

“I’m excited to be honest,” he said. “I think I’m going to be playing in the final group of a European Tour event on Sunday, so who doesn’t want to do that. I’m really proud of how I played today. It’s the first time I’ve been in this position in a European Tour event.”

“I’ve always worked hard and felt like I had a pretty good game. I’ve just had a slow progression I guess. This year, I’ve played a lot of good golf, but I had a poor year last year and my self-belief has taken a while to catch up with my game. I feel it’s starting to do that now.  I’m playing well but I’ve been getting in positions and then falling back just because of a bit of nerves or whatever. Today I felt really comfortable. I was nervous, but I wasn’t ever worrying about messing up. I was always looking ahead of me and trying to make birdies. I think that’s the difference.”
