July 26, 2015: Sundays are turning out to be rather special for golf fans in India. Lying in T11 overnight, Anirban Lahiri fired a spectacular 64 in the final round of the European Masters to force his way into the top 5. The marquee European Tour event came to a thrilling finish with Brit Danny Willett gaining a one shot victory over Mathew Fitzpatrick to win the title. Shiv Kapur scored 67 to finish T24 along with SSP Chawrasia who made 69 in the final round.

Jyoti Randhawa made a 71 on Sunday to slide 13 spots and finish in T37. Rashid Khan had started the week with a very promising 67, but failed to break par since. He finished with a second straight 74 to end the week at the bottom of the sheet.

Lahiri was rather disappointed with his 70 in the third round, hurt by a bogey at the 12th and a triple bogey at the 14th on Saturday. He made amends with a brilliant run on Sunday, that saw the top ranked Indian make seven birdies.

Anirban was even par through six holes – having nullified an opening hole birdie with bogey at the fifth. And then he caught fire gaining six shots in the final twelve holes to surge up the leader board.

“It was a relief (to finish well) as I’m been playing well and I haven’t been able to put a together a good round. It was a good feeling to play well on the back-nine as I had been struggling there the last few rounds. It’s good to finish with a 64 as I did the exact same thing with a 64 last year too,” reminded Lahiri. “The experience of being here many times showed especially on the greens. There were some tricky pins which I’ve seen before and having been here a few times, you now know where to hit it, how it’s going to break and that made a massive difference.”

I’m happy to start playing well again. I had a very good start to the year and played well in the beginning but I didn’t play anywhere near my best after that,” added a clearly delighted Anirban. “I feel like my form is coming back. It’s an important time of the year and hopefully I can get this going.”

With the PGA Championships round the corner, this result should do a world of good for Anirban’s confidence.
