May 19, 2015: Wentworth is the centre of gravity for Indian golf fans this week. A determined Anirban Lahiri will tee off at 0800hrs on Thursday in Virginia Water looking to bring his resilient best to this marquee European Tour event. With Rory McIlroy in the mix the BMW PGA Championship is high on the radar for golf fans across the globe. Jeev Milkha Singh, SSP Chawrasia and Shiv Kapur are the other Indian players in the draw.
Lahiri has withstood the rigours of golf in the USA and even though he has missed a couple of cuts, he went out after holding steady under challenging circumstances in both regular competition and the match play format.
Meanwhile, Jeev Milkha Singh is coming off a good week in Spain and will seek to consolidate with another good performance on the European Tour.
Chawrasia has been off the course for a little, which should help him try and take advantage of his fresh energy. Shiv Kapur was bitterly disappointed to miss the cut in Mauritius recently, so he will hope that the English island proves to be a better hunting ground.
The field at Wentworth has a collection of 150 golfers from 24 countries across the globe. The presence of McIlroy, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Martin Kaymer gives the event pedigree in terms of multiple major winners.
McIlroy is the defending champion and another victory following that brutally brilliant performance at Quail Hollow will seal his status as a big favourite for the upcoming US Open.
Every winner of this event since 2002 is in the field, except for the winners of the 2005 and 2009 winners. Justin Rose will bring some lusty cheer to the venue as he carries home hopes for the English fans.
The Mauritius Open winner George Coetzee is also in the packed field at this mega event, that will be played in Surrey this week.
