Anirban Lahiri PGA Tour: Seeks his first win on Tour

If he can grab seven more birdies in the final round on Sunday, Lahiri will have set the all-time PGA TOUR record for total birdies in a 72-hole event.

There is a first time for everything. For Anirban Lahiri, it’s the first time he’s held a 54-hole lead on the PGA TOUR.

It’s been a decent stretch of golf for the Indian golfer the past few weeks. He birdied his final seven holes at last week’s Venetian Macao Open on the Asian Tour only to fall short in a playoff.

This week, he’s continued his strong performance.

After opening with rounds of 66-66, Lahiri came out and fired off a 65 to take a four-shot lead over the defending champion Justin Thomas and Russell Knox.

“It’s very satisfying, to finish the way I did definitely a big positive. I was determined today to keep my focus right through the 18 holes, and I’m happy I managed to do that. Just going to try and do the same tomorrow,” Lahiri commented following his round.

The only hiccup on his scorecard came at the par-4 12th hole when he double bogeyed. Other than that, he collected nine birdies to continue his birdie bonanza.

“I just told myself that I got rid of my double-bogey early in the round today and just tried to focus on what I needed to do. You know, like I said, I feel like I’m hitting it good with my irons, my wedges and I’m putting it good.”

If he can grab seven more birdies in the final round on Sunday, Lahiri will have set the all-time PGA TOUR record for total birdies in a 72-hole event.

The 54-hole leader at the CIMB Classic has gone on to win five of six times. At 19-under and a four-shot lead, Lahiri’s chances at his first win on TOUR are looking good.
