03 June 2019: On the heels of a mixed week at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma make a quick hop to Columbus, Ohio for a shot at playing the US Open. The two Indians have seen their rankings drift South on the back of some disappointing results in recent months. Both Lahiri and Sharma played some good golf though in the Memorial Tournament, producing rounds of 65 and 69 respectively as they weathered a tough course and demanding conditions.
There are several Sectional Qualifiers on the deck this Monday with as many as 927 golfers, including more than 200 amateurs competing for a spot at the US Open on the Pebble Beach course later this June. The qualifiers on Monday are often called “Golf’s Longest Day,” as several hundred aspiring golfers jostle for space at 12 different sites with the US Open just days away.
The field in Ohio is super competitive with the presence of some marquee names in the running for a US Open spot. Steve Stricker, Luke Donald, Max Homa, Cameron Champ, Jason Dufner, Aaron Baddeley, Jhonattan Vegas, Jonas Blixt, Charley Hoffman, Scott Piercy, Ryan Moore, Nick Watney, Jason Kokrak, Bill Haas, Russell Henley, Russell Knox, Danny Lee, Pat Perez, Sam Saunders, Kevin Streelman, Harold Varner III are all in the running from Columbus.
Of the 12 sites hosting these events today, the Brookside Golf & Country Club and the Scioto Country Club will play host to 120 golfers, including 22 amateurs. Walton Heath will also host a similar number of golfers, with the other sites carrying smaller fields. There are also qualifiers being played in Japan and England today as they all plunge into action in a mad rush for the remaining few spots in the US Open.
