December 30, 2014: As we turn the leaf on yet another year on the calendar, it is time to reminisce on some intelligible quotes around the game of golf. In this two part series, we bring you some of the most memorable quips this season.

 

Paul Azinger

The former pro and 2008 USA Ryder Cup captain was at his succinct best when he was asked to compare Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus at this stage of their respective careers.

 

“The difference between Jack and Tiger at 38 is when Jack was 38 everybody wanted to hit like him, but I don’t think many guys want to hit like Tiger.”

 

Tiger Woods

2014 has been less than memorable for the prolific Woods. His body has been aching in several places and the back surgery he underwent laid him low for much of the season. Woods explained why his troubles were deeper than ever, even as he struggled to deal with his back.

 

“I’ve had Achilles injuries, obviously knee surgeries, but this thing is just way different. It’s way more debilitating than I thought.”

 

Jack Nicklaus

The folks running golf in the USA were deeply traumatized by yet another mauling at the hands of the European team. So much so that they formed a task force to deal with their team’s Ryder Cup ailments. Legendary Jack Nicklaus though was of the opinion that the US PGA was over reacting.

 

“That’s sort of overkill. We’ve had 70 years of the Ryder Cup, and it’s gotten along just fine. The pendulum will swing back without making a monumental thing about it.”

 

Bubba Watson

He is a man with many admirers. Bubba Watson is also a man who likes to keep it simple. One day he was quizzed about the need for a swing coach and a mental game coach. Here is his lucid response.

 

“I’d quit the game before I do that.”

 

Rory McIlroy

It is just two words. But this one ought to be rated among the best quips of the past season. Just after he won his fourth career major title, McIlroy was asked about his goals for 2015.

 

“Green Jacket,” said the young man.
