September 7, 2014: Amidst undulating drama and changing leads, Billy Horschel held his nerve to clinch a memorable two shot victory at the BMW Championship. Hymns of redemption filled the air at the Cherry Hills Country Club as Horschel laid to rest the ghosts from that final hole blowout at the Deutsche Bank event last week. What a difference a week can make, a few good swings of the golf club can sometimes alleviate the pain of a lifetime and so it was too for Horschel. The missed cut at The Barclays and the blown lead last week, all seem a distant memory as Horschel marches to Atlanta with the grand prize of $10mn within sight.

The American took the title, easing to par at the 18th to finish the week at No.2 in the FedExCup standings. Horschel needed just a bogey to ensure victory after Bubba Watson finished his round at 12-under, shooting a third straight 66 in Denver. Morgan Hoffman finished in spectacular style, making 62-63 over the weekend to finish in third, just one behind Watson.

Jim Furyk (66), Rickie Fowler (68), Sergio Garcia (67) and Ryan Palmer (71) ended in a tie for fourth signing off with a nine-under 271. Adam Scott (66), Rory McIlroy (66) and Jordan Spieth (67) finished in a tie for eighth with a 272 on their cards. The results at Cherry Hills mean that the race is essentially down to five men – Chris Kirk leads Horschel, Watson, McIlroy and Hunter Mahan in a race to the wire for that pot of gold that awaits them in Atlanta.

But also remember the special show that Hoffman has turned on these past few weeks. He has been sprinting from behind and catching the men in front, week after week. He became the first player to make the cut line at each of the three Playoff events to earn a berth at the TOUR Championship this week. His work at The Barclays lofted him from 124th to 72nd in the FedExCup standings. He gained four more spots after the Deutsche Bank Championship to move to 68th and jumped up to 21st following his stellar showing at the BMW Championship.
