PGA TOUR Release – August 17, 2018: Brandt Snedeker shot a 59 in Thursday’s first round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, marking the 10th sub-60 score in PGA TOUR history. Snedeker, who won the event in 2007, made 10 birdies and an eagle on the day en route to the 11-under score.
Arjun Atwal fought back from a string of bogeys early on in his round to post a battling 72. At two over, Arjun will have a mountain to climb on Friday to post a low score and make the weekend.
Following a bogey on his first hole (No. 10), Snedeker’s round included birdie streaks of four (Nos. 13-16) and three (1-3), an eagle-2 at the sixth (hole-out from 176 yards) and a 20-foot, 4-inch putt for birdie at the ninth. The 2012 FedExCup champion’s previous-best round on TOUR was 61 (three occasions, most recently at the 2015 Wyndham Championship).
“I better be smiling,” Snedeker said. “I don’t do this every day.”
“To know what you’re trying to do and step up and have a 20-footer (on the final hole) and know what it means, I was very aware of what was going on, and to knock that putt in was really special,” Snedeker said. “To know I’m a part of a small club on TOUR and not very many people have done this, really cool feeling right now.”
Snedeker, the 2012 FedExCup champion, won the Wyndham in 2007. He broke Si Woo Kim’s 2-year-old Wyndham record of 60 and had the best opening round in this event’s history. Arjun Atwal had a 61 in 2010.
“The trick for him is, he’s playing great. Now he’s just got to rest, relax and start over tomorrow from scratch and go play three more good rounds,” said Furyk, who also shot a 59 at the BMW Championship in 2013. “It’s awesome to see.”
Jim Furyk holds the 18-hole scoring record with a 58 in round four of the 2016 Travelers Championship in Hartford, Connecticut. The last player to shoot 59 on TOUR was Canada’s Adam Hadwin in the third round of the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California. A complete list of sub-60 scores on TOUR is below.
