Callum Shinkwin leads KLM Open, Shubhankar starts with a 70

A six-under 66 helped Callum Shinkwin take a one-stroke lead over seven other golfers including Gavin Green. Shubhankar Sharma is lying in T26

13 September 2019: The 100th edition of the KLM Open got off to a brisk start, with Callum Shinkwin soaring to the top on a brilliant 66. Gavin Green continued to show great touch around the course, producing a 67 to lead the chase with Swede Per Langfors, Scot Marc Warren, Dane Nicolai Højgaard, and Englishmen Chris Paisley, Sam Horsfield and Matthew Southgate at five under. Shubhankar Sharma, looking to shake off any lingering disappointment from missing out on a PGA TOUR card, shot two-under 70.

Gaganjeet Bhullar shot an even 72, despite making four birdies. Bogeys on the 10th & 17th hurt him, but not as much as a double on the par-3 seventh hole. SSP Chawrasia, still looking to turn around his fortunes, birdied the par-4 fifth hole, but suffered stains at the 7th, 9th and 12th to slip to a 74.

Shinkwin will draw courage from the first round, especially the stretch from the second, where he collected three birdies and an eagle in six holes. The 26-year-old withdrew from the Omega European Masters owing to food poisoning and a suspect back took him out of the Porsche European Open. He is also on the edge at 126th on the Race to Dubai rankings and a good result this week has an existential influence on his immediate prospects.

“My golf as of late has not been great as has my health as well,” said Shinkwin. “But the golf is still not there, still very uncomfortable, but I managed to turn it around today and shoot a good round of 66.

“I’m just working hard and if I’m feeling uncomfortable then that means I’m doing the right things.”

Shubhankar fired three straight birdies from the second to get off to a flyer. But back to back bogeys at the sixth tempered his pace and eventually the 22-year-old signed on a card of 70.
