Valuable lessons from Melbourne

Last week and this week, the ball striking has been absolutely the same. It was all down to the putting, the ball is not going into the hole, just taking extra shots to get in the hole. This week was totally different. Last week, I played really solid and thought I would repeat it this week.

I missed probably three fairways the entire week and must have had like 15 three-putts this week, which would be my first time in my life. I’ve gone through four or five tournaments where I’ve not had a three putt.

The game is there, I won’t be surprised if I go out to win a tournament very soon.

I think it was a lot to do with the overconfidence from last week’s top-10. I sat down with my family over dinner last night and we were thinking about what went wrong. A lot of key factors which I thought would not disturb me got to me. It’s a good lesson for me. I will have to be more patient and not be result oriented and keep to the process and routine.

My course management needs to improve. I thought on some holes, I could fly the bunkers but the winds switched and it cost me. It’s a lesson learnt. Over the years, these are the things that make you a good player. After playing eight tournament rounds at Royal Melbourne, I would say I have learnt a lot.

I was enjoying the wind, the crowds last week at the Australian Masters. I played with Matt Kuchar, Richard Green and Geoff Ogilvy last week. I found a lot of confidence there. First day, I made the best score out of the three. Those guys were saying I’ve got the ball striking to play on the PGA Tour.

This sort of things mean a lot. It’s a really good thing when someone like Kuchar or Ogilvy say something like this. It’s just a matter of time when I play alongside these guys regularly.
