Gauri Monga blogs, top Indian today

Her experience of playing among the LET toppers and producing a stellar game as an amateur

Nov 29, 2013. My driving was really working for me today. I didn’t’ hit any bush, which are plenty in the Delhi Golf Club. I was straight, on the fairway and my putting also worked. Except the 15th hole, I drove on all holes. Many players don’t use the driver in a bid to hit medium distance. But my experience is that because at DGC if your tee shot is fine, then you are likely to hit the fairways and find centre. I don’t get my drive long, not long enough as many of other players but a driver helps to keep it on the fairway and to me that was my main focus.

Being a DGC girl has helped a lot. Of course you have home course advantage. As leading Indian on day one and then continuing the same into day two, it means a lot. Also there were a lot of familiar faces in the gallery. All uncles and aunties mean big support to me. Being an amateur, it’s so encouraging. I am trying not to take in pressure.

Tomorrow will be a tougher day. These other players are consistent and seasoned. I will continue to put in my best. Not sure if they are learning from me but for me this course which is rather complex as well, is something that is working. I have had some recent wins here.

While the course is sided by forest, if you keep it straight it’s fine. DGC is not easy to new comers. It can be intimidating.

Besides the galleries, I have had the support of my family and close friends. My brother came for a few holes and walked along. Mom (Aasthana Monga) wasn’t there today much as she was volunteering. Aunty Bubbles (Ladies Captain of the Delhi Golf Club) was there.

I will be looking forward to the next two days. Although I have not decided my outfit, I ensured I wore green on day one.

My designer friend Nikhil Mehra has stitched a pink skirt for me so may wear that on the final day.
