How to go out there just start playing golf? Nothing to worry. Get a bunch of clubs.

You don’t even need the full set and certainly don’t be in a rush to get that driver. It’s the big one and often one can’t wait to get those long drives going. So go step by step as you make your way to a golf pro store. Of course there will be plenty on offer and varieties of clubs. Before investing in a golf set, go a few rounds at your nearest course using rental equipment. If the game and you get into a relationship, only then move into getting a full set. GolfingINDIAN.com puts together some ideas.

FELLOW GOLFERS CAN HELP

Everyone is a beginner at some point. So ask around among golfer-friends about the first buy or even a rental. Avoid really old clubs. When playing with a rental as well, try equipment that’s not ancient and will ensure you get interested in the technique. Get on to the driving range before you begin shopping for your own set for sure. Not only will you get an idea of which clubs suit your swing style but others at the range may also be a good source of recommendations for good places to buy equipment and brands to look into.

THE TECHNOLOGY HOOK

Don’t fall for the latest technology. You are not there yet. There are some established brands to choose from when buying a set of golf clubs. Adjustability, fine detailing might excite you initially but invest instead in a trusted brand of basic clubs. Most half sets can be a good starting point with four, six, eight, pitching and sand wedge. They come with a three wood (lighter than the driver) and a putter. Missing are the driver and two, three and four iron that are particularly hard for a beginner to hit.

Not only are half sets easier to use, they make selecting a club much easier. Half sets of clubs will enable you to improve your swing without having to spend much more on a complete set of clubs. Once you get stable at the game and learn the basics then choose a half set to which you can add more clubs as you become more adept, or trade it in.

TRIAL RUN

Enter a global golf store and you will know what it means to try equipment. No one must buy any clubs without swinging them for at least forty minutes. This is possible now in India although we are far from having hangars full of equipment and indoor practise nets to test what we want. The choice is limited but most established brands are now here. Always try your new set of clubs before you buy them. If you buy your clubs at a pro shop, try to hit a few shots on the driving range before you make your purchase.
