August 08, 2016: The caddie community will be out in force to watch Nawazuddin Siddiqui play a tapori golfer in an upcoming movie called Freaky Ali. The trailer, just released, is creating a buzz lacing innuendo, humour and purpose rolled into a canvas that is set to excite audiences across the country.

Nawazuddin is a proven hand at playing the man of the masses, his voice and gait trained to align with the middle class of our country. Sohail Khan’s movie is already drawing comparisons with Lagaan. Amir Khan took on the British Raj to puncture English pride by orchestrating phirkis in a timeless classic that saw movie fans eating out of his soiled hands.

Sohail Khan seems to want to do a Lagaan with golf as the tool of choice in this new movie called the Freaky Ali. It will surely be interesting to watch Nawazuddin take on the suited elite and their pipes with his rustic look and a golf game to match.

Nearly 60% of the professional golfers on the India’s PGTI Tour have caddied at some point in their golf journey. The movie will clearly resonate to them and large sections of the audience, who will each have their own class conflict tale to narrate.

Siddiqui appears to bring an equal measure of defiance and deftness to his role, based on the scenes in the trailer. At one point in the trailer, he points to a rich golfer in talking to his friend Arbaaz Khan. “This guy, he can’t have any children,” concludes the cheeky hero. “He doesn’t know how to put a ball into a hole.”

In another scene, he looks the snobbish golfer in the eye, giving him a full throated dressing down. “Ghamand toh main pahaad ka bhi toda, phir tu kaun si cheez hai?” (I have broken through an obstinate mountain, what have you got) in a clear reference to an earlier work of Siddiqui, Manjhi – The Mountain Man.

Freaky Ali is set to stoke the fire for golf with this imaginative work by Sohail Khan and Siddiqui. If one of our three golfers – SSP Chawrasia, Anirban Lahiri or Aditi Ashok – end up winning an Olympic medal in Rio, it could set the counters on fire too for the movie.
