November 26, 2013. All eyes are set on fast approaching Hero Women’s Indian Open making its debut at Delhi Golf Club (DGC) from November 28. The 7th edition of the tournament will have a stellar playing field of 108 golfers from more than 30 countries. All finger’s are crossed for homegrown talents as the venue shifts to DGC after six years in Gurgaon.

 

Despite the presence of highly competitive golfers from across the world, an equally potent Indian contingent is ready to take on the challenge this year. Top rankers of Women’s Golf Association of India’s (WGAI) merit list would make their dedicated effort to make best use of home conditions.

 

Kolkata girl, Neha Tripathpresent leader of WGAI’s Order of merit has won five out of thirteen Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour this year. In-form golfer would certainly pose a strong contender at the tournament.

 

Young Vani Kapoor of Delhi has all the potential to match up to the best in the world. With a recent win at Hero Pro golf Tour, she is in high spirits. With double win in 2013 she is placed second on the WGAI Order of merit.

 

The greatest home challenge can come from seasoned Smriti Mehra. She is currently the top ranked Indian player on the LET order of merit and presently third ranked professional golf players in India with four wins on Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour in 2013.

 

Other homebred Order of Merit women golfers Ankita Tiwana, Saaniya Sharma, Rani Sonti who are ranked 4th, 5th and 6th have had good finishes at national tournaments and display huge potential to come from behind.

 

The 7th ranked Sharmila Nicollet has an edge over other compatriots, for the reason that she carries the experience of playing among best in Ladies European Tour tournaments. However, due to ankle injury her wins this year on local tour has just been limited to one but the Bangalore girl can strike back any moment.

 

Pune’s Shweta Galande with one win already in her purse at Hero Women’s Pro Tour can utilize this opportunity to display her hidden golfing skills. She is Ranked 8th on the WGAI’s Order of Merit.

 

Other Order of Merit golfers in fray, Preetinder Kaur, Pallavi Jain, Vandana Aggarwa, Shraddhanjali Singh, Nikki Ponappa, Meghna Bal, Mita Gowande and Bhavi Shah, have all exhibited some top finishes this year, to remain deserving contenders for the prestigious Hero Women’s Open.

 

The US$ 300,000 (Euros 225,000) event, Hero Women’s Indian Open is tri-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET), the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) and Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI).
