Starry dreams – Icons Cup in Dubai

April 23, 2015: Expect Dubai to add glitter to golf, like few others might even imagine in their dreams. The Icons Cup that was inaugurated yesterday is yet another example of the bold experiments that come out of their sandy laboratories. Some of the greatest names in world sport have descended upon Dubai to compete in the inaugural Icons Cup 2015, a spectacular new ‘all-star’ team golf tournament, hosted at the stunning Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club on 23-24th April 2015.

The event features a battle between some galactic sports-persons turned golfers who have assembled in the Middle Eastern desert to strut their post career golfing skills on the splendid course at the DCGYC.

Incidentally the two teams – Team America and Team Rest of the World are lead by two golfing legends – Fred Couples and Darren Clarke respectively.

“I’m really looking forward to the next few days with Fred and the first ever Icons Cup. It’s an inspired idea,” said Clarke. “Golf needs events like this to take the spirit of the game to new and younger audiences and this event has every ingredient to be very special. Dubai is a wonderful place to play golf but to play this type of golf here involving so many international stars, connecting so many sports and fans, well it’s the perfect location.”

“Golf has given me some great moments and I’ve met some wonderful people over the years but to get the chance to lead a team filled with some of my country’s greatest ever athletes is really exciting. It certainly doesn’t happen every day but that’s what is so neat about the Icons Cup,” said Couples. “It brings sports together through the love of golf and creates new rivalries and opportunities to see that competitive spirit from some true legends. It’s going to be lively and I know we don’t plan to lose! But no matter what happens I know we’re going to love every moment of being in Dubai.”

The lineup is loaded with stars from some of the most followed sport in the world. Team America has amongst its lineup – Boxing star, Oscar De La Hoya, Baseballer Greg Maddux and Basketball star Ray Allen among others.

The rest of the world team has Kapil Dev, Shane Warne and Brian Lara from Cricket. Luis Figo, Andriy Schevchenko and Robbie Fowler represent a collection of Football stars. Olympian legend and oarsman, Sir Steven Redgrave is also on this team.
