June 09, 2016: Jeev Milkha Singh is set to travel to Oakmont for the US Open next week. The USGA called the Indian golfer to offer him an invite to the second major of the season. Jeev’s inclusion means we shall have two players representing Indian interest at the 116th US Open. Anirban Lahiri is also playing the event.
Jeev played well at the sectional qualifiers at Walton Heath, but fell agonisingly short of a spot at the event. But it appears that being the first alternate was good enough to nudge the veteran Indian into the US Open.
Jeev Milkha Singh at US Open – Indian has played in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2009
This will be Jeev’s fifth appearance at the US Open, with T36 in 2007 being his best finish at the event. The last time he played it was in 2009 when he missed the cut.
Jeev is currently in Austria playing in the Lyoness Open. He is lying T73 at the end of the first round, having shot two over 74 on Thursday.
The 43 year old became only the third Indian to play at a major championship when he gained an entry to the US Open in 2002.
The US Open next week will be Jeev’s 14th appearance at a major tournament, the most by any Indian golfer.
Jeev took to twitter confirming that the USGA had called him to offer an invitation to the US Open at Oakmont.
This will be Singh’s first major since missing the cut in the 2012 PGA Championship. He had also played the British Open that same season, finishing T69.
Since rising to 28th in the world, Singh has suffered a series of injuries that have kept him off the course for a lengthy duration of time.
Singh is fit again and is eager to make a solid comeback, to try and rediscover some of the touch that made him one of India’s finest golfers.
