Dec 11, 2016: Karandeep Kocchar stamped his position as the leading Indian amateur with a fine and well deserved win over Arjun Prasad  2&1 in the 36-hole final at the 116th Amateur Golf Championship of India at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) today.

Karandeep, who is 17 years and six months old, was given a tough fight by Arjun Prasad, also 17, before he prevailed on the penultimate hole of the match.

Karandeep worked up a handy lead as he was 5-up after 23 holes, before Arjun put in a tremendous fight back. Arjun won four holes over the next 11 and narrowed the gap to one when the duo walked on to the tee for the 35th hole.

On the 35th hole, Arjun missed a two-foot putt to lose the hole that gave Karandeep the title.

The prizes were given away by Mr Aditya Khaitan, Captain of RCGC.

Mr Arun Kumar Singh, Director General, The Indian Golf Union said, “Karan and Arjun were playing to script, as in the Indian Bollywood story, and went on till the closing stages hole before Karan defeated his partner Arjun 2&1. It is only fitting that this Championship came back to its birthplace.”

Karandeep, who hails from Chandigarh, clearly loves Kolkata. Five weeks ago in the same city, but at the Tollygunge Golf Club, across the road from RCGC, he shot a final round of eight-under 62 to become the first amateur to win a PGTI title on the pro Tour in India. He has also represented India at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championships in Incheon, Korea. Along with Diksha Dagar, he was also Tied-10th at the Asia Pacific Junior Championships, where each team is made up of one male and one female player.

The Indian Golf Union is the organiser and is supported by its partner Rolex. The event is being supported by the RCGC and is managed by Protouch Sports. The iconic Oberoi Grand is the hospitality partner to the event.
