March 12, 2015: In one of the most productive rounds of golf in recent memory, the top six women in the 8th leg of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour, broke par to make a collective statement of purpose. On a bright and sunny day at the Classic Golf & Country Club, it rained birdies as the women accounted for a whopping 59 of them to end the second round on a high. Overnight leader Kiran Matharu showed consistency in making a 66 for a one shot lead over Smriti Mehra.

The irrepressible Mehra was the best on show in the second round, making an effortless 65 to bring herself into sharp focus ahead of the final round on Friday.

Vani Kapoor joined the party with a 66, but she is five adrift of Matharu and four from Mehra. Vaishavi Sinha with a 69 and Shweta Galande with a 70 rounded off a memorable day for women’s golf at the beautiful course in Gurgaon.

Matharu, who already has a victory to her name this season, showed no signs of letting up. She followed through her 67 in the first round with an equally impressive effort in the second round. Matharu took 33 on either side, making four birdies and a bogey each on the front and back nine.

Her birdies on the front came in the form of a hat-trick from the par-5 third hole. She went one better on the way back, making four straight from the 12th hole.

Not to be outdone, Smriti matched Kiran shot for shot on the first nine holes taking an even 33 with four birdies and a lone bogey at the par-3 second hole. The 42 year old was unstoppable on the back nine, needing just 32 shots with four birdies to register the low round of the day.

Vani Kapoor was just two holes from finishing spotless for the day, but a bogey at the 17th dented her otherwise beautiful card. Vani made a hat-trick of birdies just before making the turn, before finally ending the day with seven birdies and that bogey for her 66.

Vaishavi made six birdies but a double bogey at the 17th and a bogey to start the day meant that she was lying in fourth at five under 139.

Shweta Galande completed the top five women at the end of the second round, repeating the 70 she made in the first round to close at four under 140.

Scores at the end of 36 holes:

Kiran Matharu 67-66 = 133

Smriti Mehra 69-65 = 134

Vani Kapoor 72-66 = 138

Vaishavi Sinha 70-69 = 139
