Billy Horschel seems to have put Monday’s tough finish at the Deutsche Bank event behind him. He will take a three-shot lead into the BMW Championship’s final round after shooting a bogey-free 63 on Saturday at Cherry Hills. He capped off the round by making a 32-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Horschel is at 13-under 197 (68-66-63), three shots clear of Ryan Palmer (67). Palmer capped his round with a 30-foot birdie putt. Two of 2014’s major winners, Bubba Watson (Masters) and Martin Kaymer (U.S. Open), are another shot back.

Horschel arrived at the final hole of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday one behind leader Chris Kirk. Horschel had just 211 yards remaining for his second shot to the par-5, but chunked his shot into the hazard to tie for second place, two shots behind Kirk. Horschel was 69th at the beginning of the FedExCup Playoffs, but fell to 82nd in the standings after missing the cut at The Barclays. He jumped to 20th after his runner-up finish at TPC Boston. He’s projected to move to first in the FedExCup with a victory at Cherry Hills Country Club.

“I just came to the realization that I was being a little too hard on myself. … When things weren’t going right, I was getting a little upset too easily,” Horschel said. “I’m not nearly as frustrated when I hit a bad shot. I know that it happens and sort of get out of my own way like I did last year when I played well.”

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy had a terrible third round. A triple bogey six at the par-3 12th hole summarised his misery as McIlroy slipped rapidly out of contention on an eventful Saturday. The world No. 1 also made three other bogeys as he slipped to 4-under through three rounds.
