November 6, 2014: Patrick Reed bent down his pick up his ball and launched himself into an offensive tirade at the WGC-HSBC Champions. In a first round incident that is under review by the Tour authorities. Reed’s tirade included some choice expletives besides what is being considered a gay slur. His distasteful utterances while on the greens are expected to earn him a sizeable fine. The American is lying four shots off the pace set by Graeme McDowell, after signing off on a one under 71.

Reed was disappointed in himself after needing three putts at the first hole, his 10th of the day. Unfortunately for the American, his vulnerable explosion was caught by the microphones and relayed across the world on television. Commentators were forced to apologise hastily for their transmission of his expletive laden communication.

It was a reprimand to himself, but golf does not take lightly to offensive language. “Nice f****** three-putt you f****** f****t,” he was heard muttering even as he picked his ball from the cup. The American had also attracted unnecessary attention last month when he was spotted using the wrong finger to silence the Ryder Cup crowd at Gleneagles.
