Feb 21, 2017: Perth-born Brett Rumford completed a remarkable return from injury and loss of form over last two seasons with a brilliant win at the ISPS Handa World Super Sixes tournament on Sunday. The 39-year-old, who won his sixth European Tour title, has already confirmed his participation at the 2017 Hero Indian Open. With his latest win he has made a huge jump in his World Rankings from 274 to 133. He is now looking forward to getting back inside the Top-100.

Rumford last won a European Tour title in 2013, when he claimed the Ballantines and Volvo China Open in successive weeks.

The Hero Indian Open 2017 will be held from March 9 to 12, 2017 with an enhanced prize purse of US $ 1.75 million and for the first time will be held at the challenging and highly picturesque Gary Player layout at the DLF Golf and Country Club. The Hero Indian Open returns to DLF for the first time since 2009.

On Sunday, Rumford beat 17-year-old Thai prodigy Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand in the final match of the tournament in Perth.

Rumford leader by five strokes at 17-under 199 after 54 holes of strokes, won four six-hole matches on Sunday at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Western Australia, in the event which was co-sanctioned by the European, Asian and Australasian tours.

The 39-year-old Rumford, who has played in India in the past, had a tough time in 2014 when he missed 14 cuts in 26 starts and made only one Top-10. In 2015 he had a surgery to have a section of his small intestine removed after falling ill in South Africa. In 2016 he lost his European Tour card.

An ecstatic Rumford said, “All I can say it has been a really, really tough week. You’re looking at the last six holes pretty much to win a 72-hole golf tournament. So it comes down to the nitty gritty of that same feeling of trying to win a golf tournament.  But to actually have that from 9am this morning and then finishing up at 5.30am is a really long day.”

He added, “So it was a unique challenge in trying to win a golf championship and feeling that same emotions, tension and pressure for six holes in four straight matches.  It’s just great to be back.  It has been a pretty tough road last year and the year before that was even tougher with my surgery.  I only saw my daughters, my twin girls for four weeks in six months, and I sort of completely fell out of love with the game and my direction in life. But it’s really nice to get my Tour card back and I feel I’ve got back my worth back as a golfer again.”

All the top Indians and World No. 25 Rafa Cabrera-Bello will be seen in action at the Hero Indian Open, a flag ship event on Asian Tour, which is now in its third year on the European Tour.
