May 9, 2014:Martin Kaymer of Germany equaled course record of nine-under 63 at the TPC Sawgrass to earn command after the opening round of The Players Championship.

 

Kaymer shot a 29 on his final nine holes, which was the front nine, to earn himself a two-shot lead over Russell Henley heading into Friday’s second round.

 

Kaymer became the fourth player to score a 63 at the TPC Sawgrass after Roberto Castro (2013), Greg Norman (1994) and Fred Couples (1992).

 

American is still looking for a win  since the HSBC Champions in Shanghai of 2011. He hasn’t had a top 10 all year. But the 29-year-old German has felt his swing start to come together in recent weeks.

 

Henley, who led the opening round till most part of the day carded seven under 65 on Thursday.

 

Sang-Moon Bae started his round strong with a birdie and an eagle, which propelled him to third place with a round of six-under.

 

The many other seasoned players, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia sit at five-under, while players like Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson and Justin Leonard sit at four-under.

 

A few who had tough time on TPC Sawgrass included Phil Mickelson, who is three over and World No. 2 Adam Scott struggled from the beginning to stay five over after the opening round.
