Jan 1, 2013. Who would have thought the first golf headline of 2014 wouldn’t be about a win, about Tiger Woods’ Major drought fixing plans, or even of new equipment. Instead it’s ‘the’ love story of the golf world finally getting formalised. Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki are engaged. The sport power couple announced their engagement Tuesday night on Twitter, which was Wednesday morning in Australia. A spokesman for McIlroy confirmed he popped the question in Sydney, where Wozniacki is starting to prepare for the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Rory tweeted the picture shared above on twitter. The instagram included her engagement ring, a photo of them together and fireworks over the Sydney Harbour. “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”

Girlfriend Wozniacki, a professional tennis player, tweeted in return, “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! … I said YES!!!!”

These tweets of the New Year, which broke the news to the world will hopefully end  put to rest two reports out of Ireland at different times this year that they were splitting up. One of those reports was in August, even though McIlroy and Wozniacki had dinner in New York the following night ahead of the U.S. Open in tennis.

Northern Irishman McIlroy and Dane Wozniacki have been in a relationship since 2011 and have regularly appeared together in public. In April, Wozniacki acted as caddie for McIlroy in a par-three competition on the eve of the Masters.

The CBS blog by Kyle Porter said, “So much for rumours.” It later added”

“I wonder if she’ll have to sign with Nike now?

All jokes aside, congrats to these two. They endure more tabloid trash than any couple ever should and I hope they have a long, happy marriage.”
