There is more than just golf on the mind of Rory McIlroy. The golfer from Northern Ireland drew the curtains on a well-kept secret when he revealed last week that Erica Stroll, his wife, was set to deliver a baby anytime now. McIlroy insisted that golf takes a backseat for the moment as he waits nervously for a call about the impending arrival of a new member into his family.
“We’re about to be parents very soon, so we’re obviously super excited,” McIlroy told media on the sidelines of the BMW Championship. “Yeah, we’ve been sharing the news with friends and family, obviously, but I didn’t think it was something that I really particularly needed to share out here. It’s a private matter, but we’re really excited and can’t wait for her to get here.”
The Tour Championship in Atlanta is the prestigious season ending event, with the winner taking a $15mn pay cheque. But already a millionaire many times over, money or the gravity of the event pale in significance as McIlroy stays ready for an abrupt departure upon hearing any development on the home front.
“Just depending on what happens,” added McIlroy. “I’m going to play in many more Tour Championships and it’s only going to be the birth of your first child once. That trumps anything else.”
McIlroy began the final round of the BMW Championship, three strokes behind the 54-hole joint leaders, Hideki Matsuyama and Dustin Johnson.
Stroll met McIlroy in 2012, while she was working with the PGA of America. But it was only three years later that they started dating each other. The couple married in April 2017. They are expecting a baby girl over the next few days.
