May 25th, 2014. Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club. The golf – all of 25 – may not have been ready for marriage just yet, but in this dramatic return to form displayed at the Wentworth, he has shown his comeback streak.

His 66 today marks the first time has broken 70 in the final round of the BMW PGA Championship. Rory, who began the final day seven shots behind the 54 hole leader, Thomas Björn made a surge for the top. This equals the largest final round comeback in the history of the Championship, set by Simon Khan in 2010.

This win is more meaningful for McIlroy for many reasons. The golfer announced a break up with his two year old girlfriend tennis star Caroline Wozniacki just a day before heading to Wentworth to play in what might have been his toughest week ever.

McIlroy and Wozniacki broke up after announcing their wedding and invites had been sent off. McIlroy had stated he “was not ready for marriage.” At Wentworth in a most dramatic return to the game, McIlroy who was two under for his round after 11 holes  recorded four more birdies over the closing seven holes to card a stunning round of 66.

“I knew coming in here I was playing well. I struggled a little on Friday but played great over the weekend. I was a little fortunate that some of the guys ahead of me made mistakes and I took advantage of it.

“My caddie JP (Fitzgerald) set me the target of 15 under today. I didn’t quite get there but 14 under was enough. I really wanted to win before going into the second Major of the season (the US Open from June 12-15) and I could not have asked for a better way to prepare.”
