Wins or not, 2013 has really been a spectacular year for Shiv Kapur who has displayed some great golf, hit global headlines and made news with the British Open. Despite wins at home by different players, Shiv’s been a true mascot after his first victory at Kensville and played his near best after a touch up from an Italian coach. A special report by Rajlakshmi Retesh.

September 30, 2013. When he looked up at the Leaderboard on that July day, his emotions knew no bounds, his heart was filled with pride, and it was almost like a dream come true for Indian golfer Shiv Kapur. The occasion was prestigious British Open and the venue was Muirfield golf course. He has not looked back ever since.

“The most important thing for me is that I feel like my game is improving and things are headed in the right direction. The British Open experience gave me a lot of belief that if I can lead a Major albeit temporarily, I feel it’s only a matter of time before I can convert that into 4 rounds,” Says Kapur.

Overall, the year 2013 has come as a rewarding year for Delhi Golfer. His record at the European Tour has been consistent. Besides the highs of The Open, Shiv Kapur ended tied 18th at Finnish Challenge with a prize purse of € 1,991.83. The 32-year-old golfer feels that few recent changes have helped him develop accuracy in his game. One noteworthy contribution comes from his new Italian coach.

“Alberto has been great…we have done a lot of work on the scoring shots and that is around the greens and the goal has been to save one or two shots a round that earlier I felt I was letting slip away,” Shiv explains.

With ample of golf at stake on Asian Tour, Shiv is excited for Hero Indian Open returning to his home turf Delhi. In addition, this being the 50th edition of the tournament with $ 1.25 million as prize money, makes it even more enthralling.

“I have a few big events lined up for me especially the Hero Indian Open being the 50th anniversary year, it makes it even more special and being held at DGC I’m hoping I can peak for that week.

That would be the icing on the cake.”
