April 18, 2015: Shiv Kapur is a man of sunny disposition with a resilient streak underlying his immense desire for golfing success. After a disappointing run on Friday, Kapur came back strong in the third round to remain firmly seated inside the top 30 at the Shenzhen International.
With the weather around the Genzon Golf Club aiding some low scores, Kapur made four birdies in the first ten holes to work his way up the leaderboard. Unfortunately for the Indian, he surrendered two shots on the back nine to settle for a 70, which left him in T28.
Shiv has very good company ahead of the final round. Matteo Manassero, Gary Stal and Wade Ormsby are also at 3-under 213 among a group of eight men. The world No.272 made 9 of 14 fairways and 13 greens in regulation in a round that was far better than his effort in the second round.
The Indian made his first birdie of the day at the par-5 second hole. After making four straight pars, Kapur moved up to three under when he made three at the par-4 seventh hole.
Shiv consolidated his front nine with a third birdie at the par-5 ninth hole to make the turn in 33 shots. He made back to back birdies, when he gained another shot at the par-4 tenth hole.
He was five under at this point, a score that would have been good enough to send him inside the top 20. But a bogey at the 12th and another lost shot at the par-4 18th dropped him down to 3-under going into the final round. Incidentally, Kapur has made a bogey on the 18th in each of the three rounds this week.
In the final round on Sunday, Shiv will hope to avoid the kind of fate that befell him at the Trophee Hassan II, where he paid a heavy penalty for a poor final round. He made a 75 in Morocco that saw him finish T46, when a top 20 finish for the taking. He will have a similar opportunity in China tomorrow.
