August 20, 2015: India’s Anirban Lahiri has risen to 38th position on the latest Official World Golf Ranking and seventh place on the International Team rankings for the Presidents Cup following his tied fifth finish at the PGA Championship over the weekend.

The 28-year-old, who is currently leading the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, picked up 22 world ranking points for India’s best finish in a Major championship, taking him up from 53rd place previously in the world. His highest ranking was 34th after he won the Hero Indian Open in February.

Lahiri should also lock in his place in the International Team where no Indian golfer has played in the event against the United States. The Presidents Cup will be played in Korea in October.

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship, is eighth on the International Team rankings while Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who finished tied 68th last week, is 15th on the list. The top-10 players as of September 7 will earn automatic places while there will be two captain’s picks.

Meanwhile, Lahiri’s long-time coach Vijay Divecha said that his star pupil has the ability to become India’s first Major champion.

“We knew were were on the threshold,” he told the Associated Press. “Being in the mix is the first step, and then knowing it’s how to convert your chances at such big events.”

With only days left now for the cut off, Lahiri can start packing his bags for the Presidents Cup. He will become the first Indian player to join the international team of this prestigious event.

The tournament will be played from 08 October through 11th October at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon City. The US team will be lead by Jay Haas while Nick Price is the captain of the International team. Team USA defeated the Internationals 18.5 to 15.5 at the previous edition in 2013.
