June 24, 2014. In a serene gated community in Isleworth, just outside Orlando, Tiger Woods and Arjun Atwal are neighbours and friends. The two practice together often and share a bond that goes back many years. It is learnt that Atwal has been invited by Woods to play at the Quicken Loans National. The event which is run by the Tiger Woods Foundation starts on June 23.

The Indian will play at the event through a special exemption issued to a group that includes – Patrick Cantlay, Bud Cauley, Harrison Frazar, Oliver Goss, Davis Love III, Patrick Rodgers and Brady Watt. The event raises funds and awareness for the Tiger Woods Foundation and some other charities, while also paying tribute to work of the armed forces.

“We have a great field of 120 players slated for the 2014 Quicken Loans National, and I can’t wait for the week to begin,” said Mike Antolini, the tournament director. “Fans are going to have a front-row seat to exciting competition, and it’s great to have Tiger playing this week to support the foundation and the event.”

Atwal and Woods have enjoyed a long friendship dating back to a little more than nine years. It is a bond that grew over many rounds of practicing golf and discussing life during their time together in Orlando. Earlier this year, Woods was in India to play an exhibition at the Delhi Golf club at the behest of Pawan Munjal, the Hero Motors CEO. Perhaps, more than a little prodding from his friend Atwal helped too.

“Thanks so much for the time, it was an absolute blast. It is hard to say how much fun I had today,” said the delighted Woods after playing a few holes. “It was a narrow golf course and I was nervous with my tee shot. My best buddy Arjun told me so much about India and I am happy to be here. Thank You so much.”

The first Indian to win a PGA Tour title, has been struggling to return to form, after months of rehabilitation have blunted some of the sharp edges that marked his aggressive game. Atwal will look for a strong showing to take advantage of playing with some of the best golfers on the tour. The event offers $6.5mn in prize money, with the winner taking nearly $1.2mn.
