In this interview with Shaili Chopra, Arnold Palmer reflects on how golf made him a generous giver.

Q. What has golf taught you as a sportsman?

A. To be gentle, friendly and to be competitive and to never stop trying to do something.

Q. And as a businessman?

A. You can go play golf with a gentleman, friend or an enemy or whoever. And after 18 holes you will find you will know more about that person in all so different ways. You can do business with them and in a friendly manner tells you a lot about the nature of this game.

Q. You have done a lot for golf and golf also has supported your charities and philanthropy. You have a couple of hospitals for maternity and child. How would you sum up the sport’s contribution to your efforts?

A. Golf has been my vehicle for philanthropy. I have been able to give back to society all because of this sport. Golf has been my vehicle for travelling and getting to know people across the world. In the community of health and wellbeing, golf has been the reason that afforded me the opportunity about how I could help with medicine or hospitals. These are getting better and better all the time and are doing everything to put people together and provide them quality services.
