July 01, 2015: Tiger Woods still has plenty of life in him. Despite some disheartening results in recent weeks, the great American showed why he is such a special player, with a beautiful 66 in the first round at The Greenbrier Classic. Last time he was out on a course, Woods made the worst 36 hole score of his illustrious career to make an ignominious exit from the US Open.

But all of that seemed like a distant nightmare, with Woods producing some vintage golf to settle inside the top 10 – making seven birdies in his opening round effort of four under 66 at The Old White TPC.

Woods also showed his vulnerable side – a double bogey at the par-4 sixth hole and a bogey at the par-5 17th hole served to remind fans of his recent frailties.

Woods made 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in what is his lowest round this season. He needed just 25 putts and as he walked back to the clubhouse, he must have signed on his card feeling a sense of rekindled faith in his own game.

This was just the third round this season, when Tiger has broken 70. A nearly unbelievable number, if you were to bring it up in a golf discussion of any sorts. But this 66 is the best from Tiger since the BMW Championship in September 2013.

Brian Davis and Ryo Ishikawa shot 64 to take charge of the clubhouse lead, but Scott Langley was 8-under through 17 holes, on the verge of snatching the lead. Jonathan Byrd was also one up on the clubhouse leaders, at 7-under through 17 holes.

Korean Seung-Yul Noh shot 69 to leave himself in T45 behind a slew of low scores midway through the first round.

Back to Woods – he was full of confidence going into the tournament this week. He travelled to the Bahamas with his children, immediately after the US Open. It appears that snorkelling and spot fishing help clear Tiger’s head, on the evidence of the first round effort.
