January 25, 2015: At 9, Erik Compton was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy, a condition that compromises the heart. The fact that the 35 year old is even active on the PGA Tour is a tribute to Compton’s resilience amidst personal strife. First at 12 and then in 2008, Compton underwent successful heart transplants. It is one of those stories that inspires awe not just in the golfing community but across the sporting world. With Compton sharing the 54 hole lead at the Humana Challenge, there is a soaring hope that the Norwegian American can script a memorable finish.

It isn’t going to be easy though. Compton was a distant second to Martin Kaymer at the US Open last year, the only time he made the cut in just four outings at majors. Compton’s only taste of success came at the Mexico Open on the Nationwide Tour, back in 2011. Having lived with three hearts, Compton appreciates the value of living in the moment.

“I think every day has been a blessing,” Compton said. “I’m constantly reminded of what I’ve gone through and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about what I’ve been through or what I’ve had to deal with.” After his most successful season in 2014, when he enjoyed three of his career’s four top-10 finishes, confidence isn’t in short supply.  “(I’m) probably more at ease with myself and not really feeling like I have to prove anything,” he said after closing at 17-under through three rounds. “Confidence is huge in this game.”

Compton will have plenty of company too. Bill Haas, Justin Thomas and Michael Putnam are also level with the 148th ranked American. Compton will hope to keep his run of 66-66-67 will continue on Sunday to have any chance of winning his maiden PGA Tour event. And there will be several more who will be praying for his victory as the men tee off one in the final round.
