On the cusp of resuming his life on the European Tour, SSP Chawrasia discovered that he was positive for COVID-19 last Friday. The 42-year-old Indian is reported to be in good spirits, showing no outward symptoms of the coronavirus. It is understood that his spouse Simantini Chawrasia shall get tested on Tuesday.

The four-time European Tour winner was all set to fly out to the United Kingdom this week. And underwent the test as a part of his preparations for joining the Tour.

“I did not have any symptoms as such. But for immigration requirement, I had to do the COVID test and the report came positive on Friday. I’ve been in home quarantine since then,” Chawrasia told the PTI.

“I’m taking multivitamins and doing perfectly alright, but now I will have to wait and see. It depends how long it takes to recover totally.”

Chawrasia is currently sitting 166th on the Race to Dubai rankings, having secured top 30 finishes in his last two outings – Qatar Masters (T28) and Oman Open (T25).

The 42-year-old is ranked 708th in the world and a good run during the UK swing could have helped him collect some important points and buttress his chances of qualifying again for the Olympics in Tokyo next year.

One of the great golfers India has ever produced, Chawrasia is the only Indian to have successfully defended the iconic Hero Indian Open. After years of heartbreak in the event, Chawrasia finally won two in a row when he took the title in 2016 and 2017.
