September 06, 2015: The Indian Golf Union has confirmed the participation of four young golfers at the Thailand Amateur Open this week. The tournament gets underway on Tuesday, with Hemendra Choudhary, Jaibir Singh, Seher Atwal and Anisha Padukone set to represent Indian interests at the Panya Indra Golf Club in Bangkok.

The four day competition will be a stroke play championship, with 128 players vying for glory from 12 different countries. The winner among the men will take home the King Rama VII trophy. The women will be presented a trophy by the president of Thailand Golf Association.

Choudhary is ranked fourth on the IGU Order of Merit while Singh is 8th on the list. On the women’s side, Atwal is currently third on the order of merit, while Padukone is fifth.

Both Hemendra and Jaibir have been winner in recent months. The 20 year old from Jaipur won the IGU Cochin Amateur and Singh from Bengaluru won the 12th SAARC Team Championship event at KGA in June this year.

25 year old Singh and Chaudhary, five years his junior, will both make their international debut at the event in Thailand. It will be interesting to see how these two men respond to the opportunity and the pressure that goes with it.

Seher is a Delhiite, a cousin of the seasoned Arjun Atwal. The 17 year old won the IGU Telangana Ladies Amateur Championship in Hyderabad.

Padukone is seven years her senior and a regular on the WGAI Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour.

“Our objective is to give exposure to all the squad members and we have selected these players on the basis of our selection policy as per rotational basis,” said Manisha Jaitha as she explained the rationale for selection of players.

“We have been sending our players for this prestigious tournament for a few years and we are excited to participate in it this year as well. Hopefully, we will return with the Thailand Amateur trophy,” she added. Jaitha is traveling to Bengkok in the capacity of team manager. She is also the Vice Chairperson of IGU Ladies Committee.
