August 1, 2013. It was certainly a cherished opportunity for L Sanghom, who had so far picked up the nuances of golf as a caddie at the remote Rangapahar Army Golf Course, when he was offered to swing the club.

“I never thought that I would be able to take part in a tournament,” emotional 26-year-old Sanghom said.

Saturday was a blessed day not just for Sanghom but 40 other caddies like him who participated in the Sentinels Amateurs Open Golf Tournament, organized exclusively for caddies by the Assam Rifles. The event was held at the lush green Assam Rifles Golf Course at the Laitkor Peak.

K Manimohan Singh, who is a caddie at the Assam Rifles Golf Course at Mantripukhri in Imphal, was happy to play the game for the first time.

“I want to keep playing, only if the Assam Rifles helps,” said Manimohan.

The newly recognized Assam Rifles golf course is 6,000-yard golf course, located at an approximate altitude of 5,600 feet, and has recently received recognition from the Indian Golf Union.

“We organized the tournament to give an impetus to golf as a sport in the region, especially among common people,” said, Brigadier Shammi Raj, Captain of the Assam Rifles Golf Course. He also added that more such tournaments would be organized in future to encourage talents from Northeastern states.
