August 3, 2013 Idols are often inspiration for motivated. The Chandigarh golfer, Pukhraj Singh Gill could not have fulfilled his bigger dreams until he met his idol Jeev Milkha Singh at the Chandigarh Golf Club, a few years ago. During a brief conversation with Singh, the young Gill just listened to Singh with rapt admiration.

Today, nearly five years later, 16-year-old Gill is set to represent India along with a fellow Chandigarh golfer Feroz Singh Garewal to play in the Ryo Ishikawa Junior Golf Masters championship. The event will be held in Japan from August 27. The duo will be a part of Indian contingent along with three other golfers, Piyush Sangwan, Sehar Atwal and Gurbani Singh.

“It’s a dream come true for a youngster like me. I played well in the domestic circuit this season and was placed fourth in the IGU Order of Merit. The third, fourth and fifth ranked golfers qualified for the Japan tournament and I am eager to play there. Japan has some of the world’s best courses and I am expecting a tough challenge,” excited Gill said.

The Chandigarh boys have made steady progress in the game in past few years. Gill claimed his first major title at IGU Northern India Qualifier Tournament, while Garewal won his first title, KGA Junior Golf Championship, in Bangalore in 2011. Garewal was tied for the second position in the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship last month.

“It was a close finish in Jakarta. The conditions were windy and I managed a good score. The tournament gave me an opportunity to compete against some of the top-ranked golfers in Asia and the experience will come handy in Japan. I will be playing in the Singapore Junior Golf Tournament next week and I hope I will play well there,” shared Garewal, who is a student of DAV Model School, Sector 15.

“Both of them have raised their game in the last two years. While Feroz is more physically fit, Gill needs to work on his fitness. Feroz has won consistently in the junior circuit and the confidence shows in his game. Gill has played in Scotland, a couple of times, and it will help him in Japan,” Jesse Garewal, their coach said.
