Golf in Kashmir: Children up learning curve

After decades of unrest, the kids have found great stress buster in golf, an initiative taken by Indian Golf Union has attracted hundreds of girls and boys to learn the game.

September 4, 2013. As tranquility returns to serene Kashmir Valley, golf is becoming increasingly popular among native children. After decades of unrest, the kids have found great stress buster in golf,  an initiative taken by Indian Golf Union has attracted hundreds of girls and boys to learn the game.

 

The IGU program to introduce golf at school level has received overwhelming response. Women’s Golf Association of India conducted two such camps in less than 2 months. The recent program culminated at DPS Srinagar had 28 children keen to learn golfing techniques.

 

Presentation Convent has sent 30 girls to be introduced to the sport with more than 200 young girls in a queue to learn the game. New entrants to the NIGS-WGAI Golf coaching program are 22 boys from Burnhall Boys Higher Secondary school. The coaching camps are being conducted at DPS Srinagar Golf Academy and Royal Springs Golf Course.

“The WGAI is committed to guide and nurture young talent. Since there is so much promise in the valley, we look forward to seeing rewarding results from the children in a few months. Golf being an Olympic sport has to be popularized for children in the valley. The fact that a larger percentage of students training are girls has been heartening to note,” Champika Sayal, Secretary General of Women’s Golf Association India said in Srinagar.

 

Mr Vikram Sethi and former ladies national champion, Anjali Chopra are involved in coaching the school children of Jammu&Kashmir.

 

The WGAI is also planning to rope in mothers of young golfers into the golf clinics to be held this month.The Hero Women’s Professional Golf tour leg scheduled to be held at Royal Springs Golf Course from 16th to 19th September.
