December 10, 2014: Even as golf fans wait with bated breath for a week of brilliance, some of the best golfers in the world were busy relaxing off the course, immersing themselves in the rich cultural flavours of Thailand. Wrapped in the glowing silk of the East Asian nation – Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson among others soaked in the experience at the Queen Sirikit Textile Museum in Bangkok. The richness of Thai culture seemed to enthrall these well heeled travelers, as they spent their time at the museum.

The museum is the youngest in Bangkok, set up in a renovated European style building. The Ratsadakorn Bhibhathana building, renovated through the Royal Patronage of Queen Sirikit, hosts exhibitions narrating the tale of silk. The coveted fabric has been turned into a national symbol from its status as just a handicraft material. A large part of this transformation has been made possible by the work of the SUPPORT Foundation, one of the Queen’s many philanthropic initiatives.

The Asian Tour has perhaps not seen a field as strong as the Thailand Golf Championships in a long time. And once these professionals hit the practice greens there will be far less games off the course. After all there is plenty at stake this week and it is just as well that the golfers are done adorning the beautiful colours of silk before things become inflammable.

The leading four players, who finish in the top 12 and ties at Amata Spring Country Club and who are not already exempt, will earn a place in The Open from 16-19 July, 2015. In the event of a tie, the qualifying place(s) will go to the player with the highest position in the Official World Golf Ranking at the commencement of the event.

The Thailand Golf Championships are the second in a series of eleven offering spaces at the prestigious event next year, The Open Championships at the St. Andrews next year.
