Shubhankar-Sharma is set to test himself on the big stage with a run in the WGC Mexico

March 01, 2018: In a few hours from now, Shubhankar Sharma will tee off at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City. Playing on the biggest stage of his blossoming career, Shubhankar will vie some of the best golfers on the planet for the coveted trophy and a lion’s share of the $10mn purse. More importantly, a good run this week could catapult Shubhankar onto the PGA TOUR with entries available for some marquee events with a good showing in Mexico.

Shubhankar already has an invite to the Open Championship later this year, but a great result in Mexico could also push him inside the top 50 and earn him a coveted entry into the Masters this April. But the young golfer, full of maturity, is focused on the moment and will be happy just to play his best golf and come back on Sunday with a bunch of good memories.

Great start to the season with memorable victories in both Johannesburg and Kuala Lumpur. Where do you see the season travel from here?

Yes, I have had a good start. However, as you see, it’s just the start. What I do from here on will be important.
I am feeling good at my game, at the moment. It has taken some time to sink in, but finally, I think that I belong here. As far as the season, honestly, it can go anywhere. I will not like to speculate. I will take one event at a time and let’s see where we go.

Tell us a bit about your experience playing in the desert – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Oman. Were there some interesting takeaways for you?

Playing on the desert courses has been something new for me. All the courses are beautifully laid out and long. They support the good players and it has been fun playing there. While all the courses have been good, but the one in Oman stands out for it’s sheer design, layout, and maintenance. I also spoke to the ground staff on the course, mostly Indians, and let them know that how good a work they have been doing there.
I have a feeling that next time when I am there, the results will be different.

Looking ahead to Mexico, it is the biggest event so far in your young career. How are you preparing to play there?

I am dialing from Mexico. Yes, it’s a next level event and feel out here. Suddenly you are surrounded by who’s who of Golf. All those guys you have been watching on TV, are under one roof and on one golf course, along with you.
I have done what I had to, coming into the event. I am up for the task and feel ready to go. Let’s see how it pans out.

You are now the highest ranked Indian player on the professional circuit. How does it feel to be inside the top 100?

All this talk of the top Indian player on OWGR is overhyped, I guess. It’s all part of the process. If you do things correctly, all these issues are by-products of the process. Same with top 100 feeling part. I know that I have to play well for all this to have any meaning and that’s what I have always focussed on. That is not going to change even now.
