December 12, 2013: The 18th seeded Jaibir Singh upset the 15th seed Trishul Chinnappa 1-up to advance to the second round of the Tata Steel 113th Amateur Golf Championship of India being played at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club here on Thursday.

In another interesting result, Mohammed Nazim of Bangladesh, although seeded ninth, showed 2002 Amateur Golf Championship of India winner and strong contender Manav Das the door with a 3 & 1 victory after being 2-down at the turn. The rest of the seeds had an easy outing while advancing the next round. Top seed Karan Taunk ousted Bangladeshi challenger Mohd. Sagor 3 & 2 while second seed Viraj Madappa prevailed over R Kumar 2-Up. Udayan Mane seeded third walloped local lad Sumeir Malhotra 5 & 4 while fourth seed Manu Gandas was a 4 & 3 winner over Harjot Singh Soni.

The Jaibir-Trishul tie was truly a see-saw battle with the former making a birdie to win the opening hole and making a bogey to lose the next. He chipped in for a birdie on the third to go 1-up. Trishul birdied the fifth to restore parity and went 1-up on the next hole with a par against Jaibir’s bogey. Scores were level once again on the eighth with Jaibir winning with a par.

A bogey from Jaibir on the 11th saw Trishul going 1-up. However they were back to all square after Jaibir holed a 10-footer for a birdie on the very next hole and won the next two holes to go 2-up. However, Trishul fought back winning the next two holes. With the score tied and a hole to go, it was Jaibir who went on the offensive unleashing a massive drive to land on the green of the par-5 18th in two and ended up making a birdie to win the match on the last hole.
