Kapil Dev concedes ground to IPS Mann as the pecking order gets reshuffled at Jaypee Greens

September 17, 2015: Things did not go to plan for Kapil Dev on the second day of the IGU All India Senior Golf Championship. The veteran Indian captain shot an uncharacteristic 10-over 82 to slip four spots from his overnight perch at the top of the heap. The 56 year old former cricketer was tied for the lead with Gangesg Khaitan and Amit Luthra at the end of the first round. IPS Mann took charge of the event after making a two over 74 in the second round.

Mann is in the lead at 9-over 153 after 36 holes, two shots ahead of Khaitan. Luthra is a further shot back from the leader, but the 1983 World Cup winning captain will need to push hard to recover from a five stroke deficit.

Mann has already experienced some success at this level, having assisted the Indian team win a bronze medal at Asia-Pacific Senior Championship in 2010. He climbed four spots, the same distance that Kapil slipped on the second day to take a comfortable lead.

In the other event, that is being also contested this week, the mid-Amateur Championship, Delhi’s Vikram Rana managed to sustain his grip over the lead, shooting three-over 75 for a 36 hole total of eight-over 224.

Simarjeet Singh of Noida was just one back after he matched Rana’s score on the second day. Chandigarh’s HS Kang conceded one spot, moving down to third at 13-over 229.

The top six from this week will be selected to represent India at the Asia-Pacific Senior Amateur Championship in October. The event will be played at Qingdao Golf Club in China from 14th through 16th next month.
