June 11, 2015: The leader board at the Lyoness Open in Austria has a pleasantly surprising sight for long time fans of Indian golf. Jeev Milkha Singh was perched inside the top ten for a long time before he ended the first round lying in T13, shooting an evocative 69. The embattled veteran showed off some of his best golf in recent months to plant himself just four shots behind the leader Gregory Bourdy.

Jeev was coming off a disappointing 77 in the final round of the Nordea Masters, but today’s round carried no stains from that round in Sweden.

He began his day with a birdie at the par-5 first hole, but gave it straight back when he made four again at the next hole. Singh added birdies at the fourth and ninth holes to make the turn in an impressive 34 shots.

Jeev made six straight pars from there before edging one more shot off the course at the par-5 16th hole. The 43 year old Indian finished his first day’s work with a pair of even scores to sign off on a 69.

Frenchman Bourdy was the runaway leader after he shot a blemish free 65 in the first round. He made four birdies on the front nine and added three in four holes from the 13th to gain a two shot lead.

Chris Wood was in second among a group of four men who shot five under 67. They were followed by a bunch of seven men that included Gary Stal and Peter Lawrie.

“The conditions were perfect this morning but I have to say that after the conditions we have been playing in for the last three weeks it is great to come somewhere hot and where you can shoot a few under if you play well,” confirmed Wood. “I gave myself lots of chances today so it was an enjoyable day out there – I am looking forward to the rest of the week now.”
