Dec 4, 2013: Bangalore lad Udayan Mane maintained a three-shot lead even as Karan Taunk brought cheer to the local crowd as he shot the day’s best of 6-under 65 to be in sole second position at the end of the half-way stage of the Tata Steel Jharkhand Amateur golf championship being played at the par-71 Golmuri Golf Club here on Wednesday.

Udayan shot a 4-under 67 for an aggregate of 14-under 128 for the tournament while Karan was three shots behind the leader. Simarjeet Singh was four shots further behind Karan. Jaibir Singh was in fourth place with a total of 136. Trishul Chinnappa and HS Kang were tied for the fifth place at 138.

Udayan after a steady start got into his wonted form firing three consecutive birdies from the third hole to finish his front nine at 3-under. On the back nine, the stocky golfer made his first mistake in two days when he made a bogey on the 12th which he immediately rectified it with a birdie on the very next hole. Signing off with a birdie, Udayan submitted a card of 4-under for the day.

Karan who knows the Golmuri course by the back of his hand, began in a whirlwind fashion making a hat-trick of birdies. The top amateur then lost a stroke on the par-3 fifth hole which he regained on the next par-3, the eighth hole. Karan then made a birdie on the 11th which was followed by a bogey on the next hole. With three more birdies on the 13th, 15th and 18th, Karan ended the day as the best golfer.
