Mithun Perera chases Asian Tour win

Chiangmai, Thailand, November 11: Mithun Perera will continue to chase his dream of becoming the first Sri Lankan champion on the Asian Tour when he tees off at the Chiangmai Golf Classic presented by PTT on Thursday.

Despite losing in a three-way play-off to S.S.P. Chowrasia of India at the Panasonic Open India last week, Perera is not disheartened and will continue to fight for a first Asian Tour title at the Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai.

“I had a lot of expectations on myself in India last week but I wasn’t disappointed even though I missed out on my first win. My game is in good shape so I am sure the win will come soon,” said the 27-year-old Perera.

“I play good golf and I always believe in myself. I guess I just need a bit more luck. My time will come soon if I keep up with what I’ve been doing so far. That is what I have been telling myself,” he added.

He is inspired to succeed at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event after receiving words of encouragement by his father Nandasena, who is a famous name on the old Asian circuit during the 1980s and 1990s.

Perera, who finished tied 20^th in this event last year, said: “I spoke to my dad after every round last week and he gave me a lot of good advice. He was very happy with how I finished last week too. He thinks my win will come soon if I continue to play well. I will just try to play my best this week.”

Known for his sharp-shooting game, Perera says the Alpine course will be a huge test for him. “This golf course is more suited for long-hitters and it will be a test for short-hitters like me. You have to try and hit more fairways, greens and hole as many putts as possible. It will be a challenging week.”
