Niall Horan of One Direction looks to use his break from singing with the band to improve his golf skills

November 03, 2015: A sabbatical at 22 might be beyond the reach and imagination of most young people, but it isn’t really a big deal if you happen to be part of a boy band with a legion of international fans. Niall Horan of One Direction is just that, one of four young superstars, who have decided to take a break from their hectic lifestyle touring the world, singing from their five albums.

The only Irish member of the boy band is a keen golfer too and was seen carrying the bag for Rory McIlroy during the par-3 contest at the Masters this year. Horan has made his intentions clear, seeking to use his break from singing to up his golf game.

“It’ll be the simple things like going home a bit more, seeing everyone I hadn’t seen in a while,” he told in an interview with RTÉ 2fm. “I’d like to do a bit of travelling, the places I haven’t seen properly. I’d love to rent a cottage somewhere in Ireland, or get a caravan.”

“By the end of next year, I’d like to be a low single figure in golf and in better shape, working out,” he added.

The band’s recent video for “Perfect” featured shots of Niall putting a golf ball. Niall also released a picture of an unidentified driving range, from where he was apparently striking some balls.

The young man’s 22mn fans worldwide responded enthusiastically when Niall took the bag for Rory at The Masters. And Niall enjoyed being in the quiet surroundings of the Augusta National Golf Club. “There’s not 60,000 screaming girls here,” noted Horan, as he relished walking the course.

The singer created plenty of social media waves when he tripped and fell over during the par-3 contest, creating plenty of unintentional humour for his fans and the golfing world.
