Another 74, a sore back and a meandering round of golf ensured Tiger Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Even as the rains softened the ground at the Valhalla Golf Club, Woods grimaced and suffered through a painful, perhaps last round of his season, to limp away into the sunset a hurting man. With low scores available for a second straight day, the cut fell at 2-over and worse. Woods was down at 6-over through the first two rounds.

Woods made a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine and never quite recovered. He did make a birdie on the 15th and another to sign off from the course, but it was far from enough to keep him for the weekend. Either ways, it was unlikely that Woods could have continued given the evident discomfort with which he was trudging around the course.

“That was tough. I hit a lot of shots out there, 74 of them. It was a long day,” said Woods. “It was sore. No doubt it was sore,” he said. “Just had to play through it. It’s very frustrating because the golf course is gettable,” he added. “It was as soft as it could be today. I was shocked we didn’t get any mud balls out there. You could play so aggressively to any of these flags, even 3 and 4 irons for stopping. The golf course was gettable.”

But despite those helpful conditions and his feeling that it was “gettable,” there just wasn’t enough golf in the bag for Woods to pull off a below par round to keep himself from suffering the cut. This is only the fourth time in his illustrious career that Woods suffered being subject to a cut at a major championship. It also marked the second instance where Tiger missed the cut at the final major of the season, following the one he missed at the Atlanta Athletic Club in 2011.
