The Asian Tour has expressed its support towards Malaysian golfer Shaaban Hussin, whose left leg was amputated below the knee following a motorbike accident on Thursday.
The Star newspaper reported on Saturday that the 36-year-old golfer suffered multiple injuries after his superbike skidded, which subsequently threw him off onto the shoulder of a road. Shaaban underwent surgery at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital on Friday to have his leg amputated.
Kyi Hla Han, Commissioner, Asian Tour, said: “We are extremely saddened to hear the news about Shaaban. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time and we pray that he will recover from the surgery and injuries soon.
“Shaaban has competed regularly on the Asian Tour and Asian Development Tour over the years and nearly won the Cambodian Open some years ago where he finished second to Marcus Both. He has contended as well in the Selangor Masters on his home course at Seri Selangor Golf Club which was also good to watch. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
The PGA of Malaysia also paid tribute to Shaaban, as reported by the Star. “The PGAM and its members are deeply saddened by the news of Shaaban Hussin. Shaaban has been a key figure to our region’s professional golf and helped to develop the game through his ever-giving character. Our hearts go out to him and his family.”
As an amateur Shaaban represented Malaysia in the Southeast Asian Games and bagged the team gold medal in 2001, the last time the country won the team event.
