July 8, 2014. Big money is at stake at The Open later this month. The winner of the 2014 Open Championship will pocket £975,000. The R&A has published the prize money for this year’s tournament, revealing there will be a total of £5,400,000 on offer to those taking part at the 143rd Open Championship, which will be played at Royal Liverpool between July 17-20. With an increase of £30,000 compared to last year’s champion Phil Mickelson, the winner will take home a near-seven-figure sum as well as the famous Claret Jug.

Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Tiger Woods are amongst the favourites to top the leaderboard at Hoylake. McIlroy has stepped up his preparations for The Open by playing a practice round at Royal Liverpool – the venue for this year’s tournament.

Asian Stars will also be eyeing a piece of the pie. Anirban Lahiri has been invited to play at the Open later this month, as one of the 10 highest-ranked non-exempt players in the world rankings at the end of last week. Lahiri, who finished third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year is in the throes of another successful season. He won the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters and has recorded four other top-10s. The Indian will be joined by KJ Choi, who earned his ticket to the Open after finishing T2 at last week’s Travelers Championship.

The Open is the oldest major in Golf and the event returns to Hoylake after a memorable finish in 2006, when Tiger Woods defended the title with some outstanding golf. The Hoylake is a seaside golf course with a rich heritage dating back to the 19thcentury.
